Out and about on the islands

We left Thessaloniki at 9am and drove to Kavala to meet Antigoni, an award-winning Greek jewellery designer, who showed us some of her latest work. We came to know her when she was exhibiting at Jewellery Arabia in Bahrain last year.

Later we drove to the port of Kavala to take the ferry to Prinos, another port in Thassos. We reached around 1.15pm and drove to Mironi Hotel, our base for the next three days. We met Yiannis Batsios and his wife Eleni, who I know from my 2008 trip and who have become good friends. Yiannis is very interested in promoting Thassos and he gave us all the information that we need and told us about all the places worth seeing on the island.

After a good lunch in one of the tavernas, Ammar and Taha decided to hire a motorbike and explore the island, like what they did a week ago, when we were here. It is a very good idea and I will try to do it too.

After they came back in the evening, we went for a walk to the centre and met our friend Costis, who runs a pottery workshop during the day and at night comes to his shop in the centre. It is a must see place when you are on the island... his fine work is distinctive. He also showed us how he makes very small items; he truly is like a magician.

While at the shop, we met an English couple Steve Stone and his wife Anna, who visited the island for the first time in 1992 and started to come every year. They told us it is a very special place to have a holiday; it is a sunny island and has nice beaches, but what they like more, is the people of Thassos. They are very friendly and they go out of their way to help.

Steve and his wife finally bought a house on the island and they spend every summer here. They were amazed with our expedition and they wanted to know more. We gave them our website details and they wished us all the best.

We then returned to our hotel, since we have a busy day tomorrow.
