The magic of Wadi Rum

Posted On : 28 May 2008

Wadi Rum is the most beautiful place I've ever seen!

Nothing else matters when you're here, it's just you, God and the magic of his hand. I really don't have words to describe this desert paradise, I'll let Ammar's pictures do the talking...

I've spent the past day and a half in awe saying "Wow!" at every mountain. In the words of Lawrence it's "vast, echoing and Godlike..."

We've actually just got back from a day of off-roading with our great Bedouin guide Awad and we've had such a laugh! Awad not only guides us and rescues us, but he also sings and plays the oud for us so beautifully. We also met his family this morning.

Apart from the beauty of Wadi Rum, I've loved the hospitality of the Bedu that we met. We've stopped in around four camps and each time we sat and drank coffee with them. Their faces look so peaceful and full of character, just like their homes.

We got here yesterday afternoon and did our first tour before going back to our amazing Captain's Camp, which is set up like a Bedouin camp with tents and beds inside. We had a very good buffet dinner, then danced around the campfire while marvelling at the blanket of stars above!

I've also changed my name, they now call me 'Hamda' which is the equivalent of Romeo's Juliet in a Bedouin folk tale! And best of all, our Bedouin guide Awad has proposed to me. Who knows, with my love for camels and the desert, I might just have found my place and my man!
